2002 Tour de Femme Results
Race Report
The 13th Tour de Femme was run in glorious sunshine on Sunday, on a day that peaked at 32 degrees. During the morning the conditions were perfect for racing, with clear sunny skies, little to no wind and around 20 degrees. This year the Tour de Femme attracted around 550 entries in a spectacular display of colour which stretched down from the start line on Alexandrina Drive, all the way back to the Yacht Club. Indeed it took three minutes for all of the competitors to file out of the start!
Alison Wright made it back to back victories by taking the win by 3/4 of a length over Kim Palmer, with Oenone Wood a further length back.
Racing was underway on the stroke o f 9.00am and the seeded pack of 40 or so riders quickly opened a gap over the rest of the field with all of the main contenders working hard to apply as much tempo as possible. A number of short lived attacks were made in the first half of the race, but with straight flat conditions they were quickly shut down.
Heading up the Cotter Road hill Oenone Wood and Erin Philp attacked and stole a small gap on the field. The resulting chase saw the pack split in two as riders scrambled to get back on. By the time the break was back in the peloton the lead group had been reduced to 30.
This group remained intact down through the twists and turns through Yarralumla, before the pressure was again applied, this time on the short sharp pinch on Hopetoun Circuit, reducing the lead group to around 18 riders, with 3km to go.
With 1km to go Kim Palmer attempted to go clear, but Alison Wright was very attentive and was immediately on her wheel to shut it down. Into the final corner Natalie Bates of the Trek team led the charge with last year's podium finishers all lined up on her wheel. Oenone Wood went to the open side of the road and headed left, leaving the Bates led sprint train on the right. Alison Wright swung off Bates' wheel with 200m to go and made the final dash for the line with Kim Palmer in tow. Palmer was unable to overhaul Wright, whilst Wood's longer route around the left side of the right hand sweep proved costly, making it back to back wins for Wright and a total of three victories ('97, '01 & '02), over Palmer and Wood. Bates came in for fourth with triathlete Raeleigh Tennant rounding out the five.
Congratulations to Susie Boer, Georgie Howell, Fia Norton and Kim Palmer for the orgaisation of yet another very successful edition of the Tour de Femme.
