2003 Tour de Femme Results
The race numbers for the 14th Canberra Times Tour de Femme proved prophetic, as Alison Wright stormed home to win her fourth Tour de Femme, making Wright the most prolific winner of the event.
Wright, wearing No.1, Kim Palmer wearing 2 and Oenone Wood wearing 3, finished in that order after the three favourites attacked on the rise up to Black Mountain Peninsular and stayed clear to the finish.
The race was conducted in hot conditions, with increasing wind, but overall the conditions were great for the morning's ride. Nearly 500 women clipped into their pedals at 9.00am at the Canberra Yacht Club, riding an array of racing bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes and even fold up bikes, as well as bikes towing kids trailers. The field took 2.15 to get across the start line.
At the front of the field a group of 40 quickly formed a gap of 30 seconds to the next riders over the opening kilometres. Then shortly after the Sullivan's Creek overpass on Parkes Way, the three favourites kicked away and immediately went out to a strong lead of around 30 seconds. With the three strongest riders in the race, up the road, the chase group was faced with a difficult battle to try and reel them back in.
The chase group was spearheaded by Cilla Ballard, Linda Cappello, Liz Hickey, Bronwyn Wiseman and Susannah van der Straaten et al, who managed to reduce the deficit to 15 seconds on the climb up the Cotter Road, however down through Yarralumla the lead trio stepped on the gas again and went out to a 30 second lead as they reached Hopetoun Crescent. Wood attempted an attack up the short,sharp rise, but it amounted to nothing and the three looked set to contest a sprint finish.
With Palmer being Wood's coach, it remained to be seen as to whether the two would use numbers against Wright. This proved not to be the case and Oenone pulled the final turn down onto State Circle and onto Flynn Drive, with Wright glued to her wheel and Palmer sitting in third.
As soon as the trio exited the final corner, onto Alexandrina Drive, Wright launched the sprint and cleared away to win by nearly two lengths over Palmer, with Wood coasting in a few lengths behind for third. Linda Cappello won the 14 rider bunch sprint for fourth place, ahead of Susannah van der Straaten.
