Three Essential Techniques for Roadies

Event Details:

After a cracking first round of the twilight series, the second one is promising to be bigger and better. The race, commencing at Uriarra Homestead, presents a new course to riders which is mooted as the flattest course Canberra has to offer. Yep that’s right no hill climbs.

Riders will start at Uriarra Homestead and commence riding towards the Cotter on Brindabella Road, before turning back towards the Homestead and taking a left turn towards Condor Creek. Rider will then turn before the start of the hill climb, back past the homestead, and ride to just before the decent to Uriarra Crossing before turning and back to the homestead for the completion of one lap. One lap of the course is approximately 20km.

One exciting element of this race is that all grades will complete the 40km course and only start one minute apart. There will be no resting as a bunch if you don’t want to be neutralised because the lower grade has caught you.

The twilight races are designed to be shorter and faster races that require riders to test their race craft and concentration. The first race certainly saw numerous attacks and will a flat course this could be no different. Of course the race against the clock will still be running with all riders needing to be back at the finish before the sun goes down and the race is neutralised at 7.50pm. For information, the average speed required to be back before 7.50 is around 25km per hour – remember it’s a flat course.

It was encouraging to see so many people out for the last race enjoying a picnic and some refreshments. Given the hour, riders and their families are encouraged to enjoy some time with their club mates after the race (responsible BYO). Don’t forget to hang about for the presentation and the spot prizes which will commence at 7.50.

Event Results:

Nearly 70 riders greeted the starter for the second of the twilight races hosted by the Canberra Cycling Club. Cool, overcast and slightly breezy conditions prevailed on a course designed more for those with tactical racing skills as opposed to mutants with Contador-like climbing ability. This was reflected in the fast times set by all grades over the (approx) 40km distance.

The failing light and prospect of cold beer catalysed the combined A and B grade bunch into action with Al Sieper and Sean Moran breaking clear from the start. This select pair of protagonists briefly enjoyed the company of riders in one and twos before a major regroup at the last turnaround. The Velo Canberra trifecta of Al, Mick Tolhurst and Steve Blackburn played the team card to perfection finishing with an imperious result to rival that of Ariostea in La Feche Wallonne. Kevin Hawes and Matthew Robertson took out the B Grade honours.

The Canberra racing community was supported most enthusiastically by C Grade with the large bunch holding together until the final stampede to the finish. Soaring on a tidal wave of sound generated by the carnival screams and hopes of his familial supporters, Chris Linden flung his Cervelo ahead of John Fisher and Ben Long to take the victory. Though challenged by the overwhelming gender imbalance, Rebecca Doolan finished just off the bunch to win Women's A.

A more equal distribution in D Grade allowed Allan Edler to out sprint Kenneth Webster with Kimberly Wells and Liz Moore splitting the remaining bunch to head Women's B.

Cressy Lewis showed a clean pair of heels to Craig Ritchie to win E Grade, with Anna Johnston demonstrating the success of twilight racing to make the trip from Eurobodalla to take Women's C.

A big thanks to the usual suspects in Jason Parkes and Peter Gough for timekeeping, setting up equipment and the myriad of other tasks that go into putting on a local event.

A very big thanks to the marshalls on the day; Heather Logie, Ben McDuff, Damian Copeland, and Simon Johnson, for a great result despite the impediment of my directing skills.

Henry Thomson, John Fisher, Kieran Butler and Heather Logie were all $100 richer at the conclusion of festivities based on a random number generator and the generosity of the Canberra Cycling Club. Detailed results are attached.
