Pro athletes develop simple techniques that become automatic. A three-point shooter’s follow through or a golfer’s silky stroke are techniques they’ve honed until they no longer think about them.[more.]

Event Details:

The second CCC road race for the 2011 calendar year, the first of the twilight races and the forth on the VCC point score calendar. Lookout Hill is the setting for the start/finish of this race.

The twilight races are designed to be shorter and faster races that require riders to test their race craft and concentration and of course the race against the clock by being back at the finish to make a contest of it before the sun goes down and we have to neutralised the race (which will be done at 8pm).

Given the hour, riders are encouraged to enjoy some time with their club mates after the race (responsible BYO).

Riders start at Lookout Hill and head south towards Tharwa with the turn just before the drop into Tharwa village. Following the turn riders go back past Lookout Hill and turn right towards Point Hut Crossing before turning just before the drop into the crossing. Riders then return to Lookout Hill (with a slight up hill finish). One lap of the course is approximately 17 kms.

61 riders fronted up on a balmy evening at around 26 degrees with a gentle 10-15kmh wind that would provide a tailwind for the homeward leg. With these gentle conditions, the four grouped grades generally stayed together until the longfinaluphill sprint to the top of the climb at Lookout hill.

First off was combined A&B grade for 3 laps. Ivan Rydarik, visiting from Czechoslovakia, repeatedly attacked up the short climb each time the hill was approached, and rode strongly to claim victory.
