Grades/Distances

There will be racing for juniors with the course likely to be from the homestead down to the turn before the crossing with the finish at the homestead.

Details:

• Racing starts 1pm on Saturday,17 April 2010.
• Registration will open at 12noon.
• Times-7 tags: remember to bring yours tagor if you don’t have one then contact Jason Parkes atjpparkes@three.com.aufor allocation of a permanent race number/Tag.
• You won’t be eligible for points under the points score until you are properly registered in Times-7 nor will the system show your name in the results.
• Entry is $5 with a Times-7 tag and $2 for juniors. Entry without a Times-7 tag is $15
• For safety, riders must have a current (2010) Cycling Australia licence. Day and general licences can be bought at the time of registration. Please arrive early to allow time for processing.

The event marshals are: Stephen Blackburn, Mark Hurwitz, Daniel McNamara, Adrian Middleton, Bradley Morton.

Prizes for the points score will be sourced from Velo Republic in Kingston and the Bike Shed in Braddon, Gungahlin and Phillip. The confirmed prize pool is now $5700.

New high water mark for club road racing in Canberra

First to the thanks. To Jason Parkes and Hayden Kozlow on rego – a sterling effort with so many entrants including a lot of new riders. (A reminder that riders should contact Jason early in a week before a race to get a race number and Times7 tag – it will make entry soooo much smoother with riders just needing to say their number and hand over their entry money.) To the marshals: Mark Hurwitz, Dan McNamara, Adrian Middleton, Brad Morton and Peter Gough (can’t do races without volunteers and for having to deal with a number of difficult motorists).

Now the detail:

One hundred and forty one riders started in ideal Autumn conditions for the race that took riders from Uriarra Homestead to the crossing before returning up the long slog and into the Brindabella hills to the end of the bitumen. A mix of hills and fast sprints saw very impressive average times across all grades. Good sized fields ensured competitive riding and many sprint finishes. Some smart moves were reported in the sharp hills out of Condor Creek and the crit-like speed and tactics on the approach to the finish.

The first riders home saw a sprint finish from three juniors: Tom Chester, Johannes Beitzl and Bailey Marshall. Well done! Adam Rudgley just beat Chris Buik on the line to win D-grade in the 30 kilometre race, with new comer Rebecca Wiasak taking out Womens B. Line honours went to Anthony Walker in E-Grade while Linda Banks took out Womens C.

A gathered crowd of spectators witnessed Tom Palmer just pip Stu Shaw and Alastair Loutit in a time of 1:37:44 to take out A-Grade. The early break by four or so really challenged the race plans of many. Tactics, power and endurance were the mix needed for riders to be in the top 10 standings for the 60 kilometre race.

Ian Downing won the sprint in a strong B-grade. Also tackling the tough 60 km ride was a very large C-grade and Womens A-Grade. Bronwyn Ryan had a magnificent win to take out Womens A-Grade with Laura Meadley and Alexandra Carle following in a time of 1:46:02. In a very hard fought out C-grade in the end, Glenn Columbine took out the win from another newish rider, Ben Bouffler.

So thanks to all 141 riders and see you at club races post Canberra Tour – its really is not that bad on a nice Winter day. And welcome to the twenty or so new members of the club who have joined in the last week or so. Many of you raced for the first time today with the club.
