Course map: Mini Tour RR - 4 April 09

The Canberra Cycling Club and the Vikings Cycling Club have come together to offer a two stage mini tour. The two stage mini tour is designed to give riders a feel for the upcoming Canberra Tour (CT09).

The first stage will be a graded scratch race that takes riders over much of the roads to be used in CT09 while the second stage will be a criterium at SFP.

Stage 1: the Road Race. Start will be on Uriarra Road just outside of SFP with riders going out through Uriarra Crossing and on towards Uriarra Homestead before returning to SFP. The finish is on Uriarra Road on the safe approach just before the SFP entry. Men’s A, B and C and Women’s A grade will do two laps (74kms) while Men’s D and E and Women’s B and C will do one lap (37kms). Juniors will do one lap of a shorter course with the turn around at the top of the three sisters on Uriarra Road (approximately 20kms). The start time will be 9.00am.

Stage 2: the Criterium. Note: to compete in Stage 2 you must complete Stage 1.

  • Juniors - 4 laps (starting @ 12 noon)
  • Men’s D and E - 30 mins plus 2 laps @ 12.15 pm
  • Men’s C 30 mins plus 2 laps @ 12.50 pm
  • Women’s B/C 30 mins plus 2 laps @ 1.25 pm
  • Men's B 40 mins plus 2 laps @ 2.00 pm
  • Women's A - 30 mins plus 2 laps @ 2.45 pm
  • Men’s A 40 mins plus 2 laps @3.20 pm

While the mini tour should help familiarise riders with possible conditions for the upcoming CT09, the event is also suitable for riders who want to try competitive cycling, as a full range of grades is expected to be offered. The people at the sign-on will be able to help you with selecting a correct grade.

Details:

  • Racing will commence at 9am on Saturday, 4 April 2009 (SHARP).
  • Registration will open at 8.30am and close at 8.45am.
  • Riders must enter both events – to compete in the second stage you must complete the first stage. Entry to the mini tour is $10 for general riders and $2 for juniors.
  • For safety, riders must have a current Cycling Australia licence. Day and general licences can be bought at the time of registration.

The guys from Funky Brew will be there serving their awesome coffee and muffins. Cold drinks will also be available. We are looking at the possibility of holding a BBQ – if you would like to help our then please contact us. Bring friends and family and make a day of some great racing.

The event marshals are: Donna Matthews, Bill Atkinson, Maria Bourbous, Beck Hopkins, Al Carle, Adam and Michael Phelan, and Chloe Hosking.

Vikings and Canberra Cycling Clubs combined to provide a highly successful two-stage mini-tour in the lead up to the Canberra Tour. The tour comprised a road race in the morning and a Criterium in the afternoon. A total of 97 riders started the race and 54 riders completed the tour. A highlight of the day’s racing included brothers Michael and Adam Phelan fighting it out in the Criterium sprint with Ben Hill for the A Grade podium, with Michael prevailing. Jessie Maclean took out the C Grade race over Jason Klein and in a really gutsy effort Jessamy Hosking who held a four minute advantage after the road race managed to hold on win Women’s C Grade after finding the going really tough in the Criterium race.

The real action, however, was in the junior’s race. In the road race all juniors were together until the turn when Maddy Marshall, Lachlan Porter and Lochie Ferrier lifted the pace to break away. It all came down to the sprint with Maddy Marshall just edging out Lachlan Porter and Lochie just a few seconds behind. In the criterium the gang of three broke away again after the opening lap. All three were tightly packed until the top of the straight when a touch of wheels bought down Lachlan Porter. Thankfully Lachlan was not hurt and he remounted his bike to finish the race in a courageous show of character. All of the juniors are to be congratulated by cheering Lachlan as he crossed the finish line. At the end of the race trophies were handed out to Maddy Marshall and Lachlan Porter for wining the Junior Series with Paul Genders-Dibden receiving the CCC President’s Junior Series Encouragement Award.

Congratulations to all the riders who competed in the tour and welcome to all our visitors and the ACT Vet’s riders. We hope that you will come and race with us again.

A great thanks to all the people who helped out for the day: Chris Drew, Simon Dwyer, Chloe Hoskings, Bec Hosking, Mark Stevenson, Kenny Cook, Jeremy Rhind, Julie Phelan, Mark Phelan and Malcolm Patterson

Next race is a Time Trail at Uriarra Homestead on 19 April 2009.
