Juniors

The Canberra Cycling Club Juniors range from Under 9 years to Under 19 years.  As a club we are very excited to be able to provide such a great junior program for our members.

Interested in Cycling?

CCC aims to provide opportunities for juniors to access the wonderful sport of cycling in a fun and supportive environment.

Parents often have lots of questions and we have plenty of people who can help!  Common questions are about licenses, equipment and training.  Much of the following information is important for when your child starts to race, it is not important for training (except the license!)

Membership

All participants require a Cycling Australia membership.

The cost of the license depends on your child’s age.  Cycling Australia has accurate and up to date information.

Training

CCC offers junior training for both Summer and Winter. Please see the Junior Skills Development Sessions page for detailed information.

This table provides a guide to junior training.

Note: These are maximum recommendations and not goals that need to be met.

Equipment

Bike

All participants require a road worthy bike, this is usually a road bike.  Kids grow and bikes don’t so be prepared to upgrade your child’s bike!  Always purchase a bike that fits your child, the temptation to buy a bike they will “grow into” is always there but a bike that fits correctly will make it easier for your child to ride and will be a much more enjoyable experience.

Track cycling has bikes available for riders to use at no extra charge (these are different to a road bike!).  This makes track a very attractive form of cycling to parents!

Helmet

All participants must have a helmet with the Australian Standards sticker attached, this is regularly checked at training and events.

Clothing

Shorts, t-shirt and runners are fine to begin, but as your child becomes more involved they may want specific clothing such as a jersey and knicks.  Check out the CCC kit!

Roll Out (gear size)

Junior riders have limitations on the size of the gears they can use.  Roll Out Distance is the distance the bike travels in a straight line through one full revolution of the pedal cranks in the biggest gear on the bike. CCC encourages riders to adhere to these guidelines at all times and not just during racing.

The reasoning behind this is:

  • To ensure a fair and equal competitive basis for all involved
  • To limit the competitive advantage of athletes who mature early
  • To increase the relative importance and thereby development of racing tactics
  • To encourage development of technique and ability to produce power at high cadence
  • To reduce the risk of overuse injuries

If you are unsure how to achieve this ask a club member or your favourite local bike shop!
