Australian Junior Nationals Day Three Report
Tuesday, September 7, 2010

Spectators at Stromlo Forest Park today were treated to a masterful display of riding from ACT junior rider Michael Rice in the U15 mens national criterium championship. After mechanical problems forced him out of yesterday's race with 3k's to go, Michael was determined to win today's Australian U15 criterium and he didnt disappoint. With the wind picking up after the heats for the U17 men it was going to be a tough affair and Michael rode one of the best tactical races ever seen at the Stromlo park.

Each lap he was prominent towards the front but always using his rivals to do all the hard work. As expected the pace was hot early and small group established itself at the front of the race with representatives from Victoria, NSW and WA all featuring prominently and making several attempts to form a breakaway. Approximately half way into the race three riders managed to get themselves clear of the bunch and the NSW riders were doing a good job of holding the remainder of the pack at bay. Seeing his chance, Michael exploded out of the pack at the top of the straight and quickly bridged across to make it a group of four. For a short time this group looked like it would stay away, especially when they were joined by a WA rider, however the remainder of the pack responded with gusty and brought things back together. From here there were several late moves but it was clear it was going to come down to a sprint finish. Michael's positioning through the entire race was sublime and as expected he assumed the coveted 3rd wheel through collarbone corner. Coming into the home straight he had moved into 2nd wheel and was given the dream run up the inside of the track to sprint clear of his rivals to claim the gold in convincing fashion. A very well deserved result for a class rider. On another positive note, Hamish Prosser started in his first national criterium championship and finished only a half lap down in the first chase pack. A very positive result for the youngest who is usually more at home on a mountain bike.

Earlier in the day the U17 men lined up for the heats of their criterium. Each heat would see the top 20 riders through to the final and the tactics in each heat were in stark contrast, with the first being more a race of attrition and the second being explosive and blown apart from the gun. The ACT team was missing Sean Whitfield who was recovering from a nasty fall in yesterday's road race, however Phil Jermyn, Sam Sautelle & Josh Buchanan were joined by fellow Canberra rider Josh Lind for the first heat. Phil rode a very smart race and was well placed for the entire race to easily make it through to the final. Sam was still feeling the effects of recent illness, but fortunately he has an uncanny ability to find a good wheel in the bunch and was well protected from the wind each lap until 2 to go when the pace hotted up and it was just a bit too much to handle. Despite, this Sam should be very proud of his performances over the weekend and like Michael I am sure results will start to go his way sooner rather than later. Both Josh's (Buchanan and Lind) were unfortunate to find themselves at the back early on in the race and with the wind making it difficult to move up they soon found themselves out of contention and ultimately progressed through to the B final.

In the B final Josh was determined to redeem himself after the unfortunate start line mis-clip in the heat and he rode a stellar race to finish in the top 10. The wind had picked up even more by this stage and the commentator was heard to report that it had reached 50km/h. The group strung out single file early and with the leaders riding in the gutter it was only a matter of time before riders starting dropping off. Josh rode good position early on before gradually succumbing to the pace just before mid way in to the race. However he dug deep and went into solo TT mode to continue to chase the seven leaders. Several riders behind were trying to catch up but just werent strong enough to bridge to Josh or the leaders. With 7 minutes remaining he started to gain ground on the leaders and with two laps to go was barely 20 metres from regaining contact, however the leaders spotted him and picked up the pace to start their final kick to the line. In the end Josh finished a very credible 8th.

Next up were the U17 women, with Lucy Kirk, Kate Huckstep, Maddy Marshall and Allison Rice had steely looks of determination as they took to the start line. The tactics for this race were pretty clear, stay out of the wind, keep towards the front and make it tough for their opponents. It only took a few laps but all four of our girls had managed to work their way into the front group on the road. Beyond this the race was shattered with lone riders circling with big gaps between them. About 10 minutes in to the race Lucy Kirk made her way to the front and hit the nytro riders were seen scrambling for wheels. A lap later and the damage had been done with several more riders unhitched from the main group, leaving the remainder of the girls to fight it out for the win. At this stage most states were down to lone riders, with the exception of South Australia who had two and in the end it was these girls who took the initiative and drove the pace in the final laps. Yesterday's road race winner Emily Roper found herself boxed in and too far back as they headed down the back straight for the last time, however Allison had followed her brothers lead and grabbed 3rd wheel through the bone. Coming into the straight it was a wall of riders all across the track sprinting for the line, with at Tassie girl claiming a good victory and Allison finishing just one place out of the medals in fourth.

The last race of the day was the U17 mens final. Phil Jermyn was the sole ACT representative and he was in perfect position straight off the start line. However the boys were determined to make it a tough race and it turned out the warp engines were in overdrive and the race blew to pieces in the opening laps with a SA rider joining Friday's TT champion, from Vic, in a 2-up breakaway. With a team mate in the break 3 Victorian riders then nullified and chases and it became a race in two, with the Victorian rider taking the win.

All up it was an fantastic weekend for racing for ACT junior cyclists and they have done themselves proud. Please join with me in congratulating them on their efforts and we look forward to more great results in the future.

Australian Junior Nationals Day Two Report
Sunday, September 5, 2010

After claiming ACT's first medal of the championships in yesterdays time trial, Allison Rice was keen to do the double in today's road race. The ACT U17 team were well positioned to medal in this event with three riders finishing in the top 11 in the previous days time trial. As expected the weather played a significant part of the proceedings and after the first short lap the main field had already been split in half. Allison Rice, Lucy Kirk and Kate Huckstep were all positioned well as they headed out for the second and longer lap which would take then down through Uriarra Crossing and towards the homestead. Maddy Marshall was not too far behing the lead group as she too ventured out for the second lap. The ACT girls had a solid plan going into the race and they all rode brilliantly to ensure they gave themselves the best chance of a medal. In the end it came down to the climb of the 3 sisters and as expected the highly fancied Emily Roper made her move, but Allison was hot on her heals and at the top of the climb it had become a race of two, with both girls working together to clear out from the main pack. Coming into Stromlo for the finish it was Roper who had managed to force Allison into the front position and as they entered the straight Roper unleashed her sprint to run out the winner by several bike lengths with Allison claiming second and the silver for her second medal of the championships. Lucy Kirk and Kate Huckstep continued to push on their way back to stromlo and both finished highly placed. Maddy unfortunately took a small spill in the wet conditions but fortunately was not hurt. All of these girls should be proud of their efforts and team work in todays event.

The other morning race featured a packed U17 mens field. The previous days ITT winner had posted a phenomenal 47km/h average and he featured prominently early on with NSW rider Caleb Ewan. The boys had two laps out through Uriarra Crossing and unfortunately this was the scene of events that eventually shaped the race. A lead rider crashed on the decent towards the crossing and this caused chaos in the main pack with a significant number of riders either crashing or being forced to take evasive action. This caused large splits in the field and drained most of the firepower for chasing down any breakaway's. Phil Jermyn was the best placed ACT rider at the end of the first lap and was still in a prominent position in the chase pack. Sean Whitfield came through not long later to start his second lap. After a few more minutes several pairs or solo riders came through, including Josh Lind and Ben Comfort. Around this time we discovered that Karl Michelin-Beard had been involved in the crash on Uriarra on the first lap. While he was out of the race he was unhurt and survived to fight another day. A small, slow moving group was next into Stromlo and it was clear they were not too keen about heading out on a second lap. ACT's Josh Buchanan was in this group and he informed us that most of the riders had been caught up behind the crash and had little chance of catching back up. A short time later we received the unfortunate news that Sean had also fallen and was injured. The latest report was that Sean wasnt too badly injured but was having some x-rays to rule out any broken bones.

In the end the race was decided by a decisive move by Caleb Ewan, who ditched his breakaway partner on the run back to Stromlo and he cruised in for a well deserved solo win. Phil Jermyn put in a fantastic ride to cross the finish line not too far behind the main chase groups and was completely exhausted after he crossed the line. A very gutsy ride in tough conditions. The afternoon races kicked off with the U15's racing over a modified course, which cut out Uriarra Crossing. Michael Rice and Hamish Prosser were the two ACT riders on the start line and with weather conditions deteriorating it was always going to a tough race. At the end of the first lap, Michael Rice was well placed in a small lead group and Hamish was not to far behind and he found himself in a small chase group heading out on the second lap. Around 22 minutes later the boys were back from the second lap and the NSW riders were prominent in picking up the pace on the crit circuit to try and break things up. Hamish was soon seen in a small group of three who had ridden away from the remenant of the chase group and if anything he looked to be seeking more assistance from his fellow chasers, indicating that he was still strong and wanting to continue the chase. At the final turn the lead pack was still all together and things were looking like playing into Michael's hand for another medal for the Rice family when a call came over race radio informing everyone that he had suffered a mechanical with 3km to go. Ultimately Michael had snapper his derailleur hanger and his bike was unrideable, an unfortunate way to finish but we wish him better luck in tomorrows crit. Hamish came in a short while later and had made definite improvements on his time trial result and was even heard saying he thoroughly enjoyed the race.

So all up a mixed day of results for ACT riders in what would have to be one of the toughest days of racing seen in Canberra for some time.

Tomorrow's racing is sure to be exciting with the 7 crits on a sure to be wet track. If you don't mind a little rain and have some free time feel free to come and cheer along out ACT riders as they aim for three medals in three days.

Australian Junior Nationals Day One Report
Sunday, September 5, 2010

After missing a medal last year by the barest of margins, ACT's Allison Rice blasted her way to the gold medal in todays U17 womens national time trial championships. Allison was starting as the red hot favourite and she didn't disappoint hitting the half way turnaround with a convincing lead and then extending it on the return leg into a slight headwind. In claiming the gold, Allison was the only rider to break the magical 40km/h barrier (also the first U17W in over three years to do so).

Also competing today were ACT riders Lucy Kirk, Kate Huckstep, Maddy Marshall and Amy Jeppeson. Amy and Maddy were out in the first batch of riders and set the pace at the half way check. Pushing in to the second half of the field and the big guns were coming out to play. By the time Kate started the times were starting to come down but not to be outdone she hit the half way turn in the fastest time. Next out was Lucy, who had a very determined look on her face and she shaved a few seconds off Kate's time at the turn to join two others in the fastest half way split. Coming into the straight Lucy was hot on the heels of her minute rider and claimed the second fastest time at that point. Last up was Allison who handled the pressure like a true professional and claimed the gold. Lucy's time was good enough to claim 7th and Kate just missed a top 10, finishing in 11th place. Maddy finished 19th and Amy 29th.

Earlier in the day, Hamish Prosser, Tim Booth and Michael Rice competed in the U15 mens time trial. Hamish and Tim were competing in their first national championships and handled themselves exceptionally well. Hamish is more renowned for his MTB skills but his recent form in the junior training sessions showed signs he might be a suprise packet. Using a standard road helmet and borrowed aero bars Hamish attacked the course with vigour and came in looking like he had a good ride. In the end he finished well up from the bottom of the table and set himself up well for a good ride in tomorrows road race. Michael Rice was off towards the end and faced stiff compeition from the interstate riders. Michael was strong off the lind quickly down on his bars and into his rythym. Coming into the finish Michael still looked super strong and came in 8th, but less than a minute down on the winner. Also worth noting is that as an U15 rider Michael smashed through the 40km/h barrier and he will definitely be a rider to watch in the future.

Last up for the day was the U17 mens time trial. ACT had no fewer than 6 riders in this event. ACT team riders Sam Sautelle, Phil Jermyn, Sean Whitfield and Josh Buchanan have all been posting quite close times in the junior tours leading up the event and all rode within 50 seconds of each other at the recent ACT time trial champs, so it was always going to be a case of best guess for which one would perform best on the day. In the end all riders were out of the medals but it was Phil Jermyn who backed up his ACT champs success by posting the best time for an ACT rider with 20 minutes 50 seconds for the 15km course. Josh Buchanan proved his form had returning nicely and was only 7 seconds behind Phil - a great result considering some injuries and illness in the previous months had hampered his results. The unluckiest ride of the day went to Sam Sautelle who was the first rider off for the 17M but still posted a 21min time despite being sick and having no one to chase. A case of what might have been for Sam but he will definitely be a rider to watch in the future. Sean also posted a time in the 21min zone and all four of these riders should be proud of their efforts.

Official times and places were still to be posted at the time of writing so times for other ACT riders, Karl Michelin-Beard and Nathan Booth were not available at the time of writing.

Tomorrow riders will tackle the road races in forecast wet and windy conditions which are sure to challenge even the best riders. Stay tuned for more results

Alice scores silver at NSW U19 road championships
Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The NSW senior and U19 road championships were held at the Kurrajong course on Sunday the 8 August. After her success at the Victorian championships in the previous fortnight Alice Wallett was looking to add to her medal collection. Her task was potentially made more difficult by the fact that the U19's would be racing in the same group as the elite women, albeit for only two laps.

On the day the biggest risk was that the groups wouldnt separate enough at the end of the second lap to ensure the U19 girls could have a clear sprint. However, the elite riders showed their class and let the remaining U19 girls sprint for the win, with Alice picking up second place to add a silver medal to her recent haul of silver and bronze from the Victorian championships.

Alice has worked hard over the last few months and these recent results are well deserved.

Congratulations Alice!

Alice Wallett scores Silver and Bronze at Vic Championships
Tuesday, July 27, 2010

This past weekend Canberra Cycling Club development squad rider Alice Wallett made the trip to Wangaratta to compete in the Victorian Under 19 state road championships.

On Saturday the girls raced the clock in a 14km Individual Time Trial. Alice rode an exceptional race and came in with a time of 24:38.05 to claim the Silver medal, just narrowly missing the win by only1.59 seconds.

On Sunday the U19 girls lined up for the road race championship over 57km. The course was two laps, with each lap having two main climbs. Hoping to go one better than the previous days silver medal, Alice was very prominent for the duration of the race and climbed very well over the both climbs each lap and cresting the last climb at the front.

At 7km to go it was down to only three riders and Alice found herself up against two girls from Team Degani. From then on it was always going to be difficult and the Degani girls tried their best to work her over. So after leading for most of the last 7km and hauling back several breakaway attempts it came down to a sprint finish, with Alice being forced to lead out she was eventually beaten in to third place. So a very well deserved bronze medal has now been added to her tally.

All up an excellent weekend of racing with Alice coming away with silver and bronze medals. Next up is the NSW road race championships on Sunday 8th August and if this weekends results are anything to go by Alice will be in with a good chance to add to her medal tally.
