It was a cracking day for the Uriarra-Roubaix, which with the low sun, white gravel and rolling hills more resembled the Strade Bianchi – which is no less easy.
Course was half gravel and half bitumen, and the conversation and laughing from combined A/B grade could be heard for miles as they enjoyed the first leg on bitumen. In fact Women’s A/Men’s C put almost 1 minute into A/B on that first leg.
The smiles had all turned to grimaces by the end of the 1st gravel leg though and the bunches had all broken up into small groups and individuals. Certain strongmen appeared to be missing from the bunches, and this would continue to occur for the next 3 laps.
Today was not a day to take your favourite water bottle as bottle ejection was resulting in many thirsty riders gasping for water as the race went on.
Notable DNF’s included Snadzy, who shook his handlebars loose, broke a chain and got a puncture, and likely wore his cleats out, after walking in each time. He’s lucky his Chinarello frame is not splintered all over the road as well.
Liam appears to have been stitched up by his Quon mates who packed a punctured tube into his new tube box, which meant a tube change, false hopes and subsequent walk.
The visiting Swiss uber mountain biker, was a potential dangerman, but after a few laps, his borrowed CX bike had both brakes seize up and gears refused to change.
Funniest story of the day was young Dave, from D grade going out for his final leg on the gravel, and punctured right at the start finish line. After yelling a few words rhyming with ‘duck’, he threw his bike into the grass, only for his dad to remember he had a spare wheel in the car. Dad was sent sprinting for the car like the best European mechanics and Dave was back in the race, ultimately holding on to 2nd spot.
Great racing, despite the fact that of the 31 tough participants who started the race, only 21 ended up finishing, and many only after making mid race repairs.
