RACE REPORT AND RESULTS:

The attacks started right from the beginning in a strong A grade field on CCC’s second longest course – only Iron Mike is longer, at 100km. Al Loutitt (Tiffen), Steve Crispin (Ride 365) & Nick Wilson (Ride 365) managed to bridge the gap to Lewis Cressey (ONYA Bike), but Lewis never looked challenged and convincingly attacked within the final kilometre to take out A Grade.
A combined B+C Grade rode a disciplined first half, whilst Brendan Byatt partnered time after time with various other willing attackers going off the front.  Brendan eventually stayed off the front with youngster Dylan Hopkins for most of the race – an effort reminiscent of Dylan’s C Grade criterium win in January, where he attacked solo from lap 1 to win in the end by half a lap! But when today’s B Grade peloton stopped cooperating in the final 15km, Warren Wood found himself with matches to burn, successfully bridging the gap and riding past the two leaders to win B Grade.
Henri Desgrange – widely credited as the original creator of Le Tour de France – once said that his ideal race “would be one where only one rider made it to [the finish]”. He probably didn’t have CCC’s Pierces Creek C Grade race in mind when he said that, but congratulations to Alexander Newman for winning Henri Desgrange’s ideal race!
A combined D+E Grade stayed mostly together for the first 45km, with a couple of riders suffering punctures on the first lap, before a series of attacks and chases over the final 13km looked promising for Viv Rolland and Rainer Wilton, but Kurt Andrews timed his effort perfectly to take the honors at the finish line. VCC’s Jerome Poblete took out E Grade with great enthusiasm, continuing straight on past the finish line, assumingly to ride home, whilst Elizabeth Vuchan took out the Women’s classification.

The next Road Race is Uriarra Roubaix on Saturday 8th April 2017, the same day as Paris Roubaix in France. Thanks to Pushys Fyshwick and McDonalds ACT, the race will be supported by neutral spares vehicles, and prizes will be on the line!
The next Individual Time Trial is on Sunday 2nd of April, on a course which hasn’t been used for a long time for time trial – South of Tharwa.
See you at the next race,
Matt Robertson
CCC Club Captain, and stand-in Race Director, whilst Gordo is on holiday 🙂

DISC BRAKES: The use of Disc Brakes is prohibited at CCC events. Club insurance won’t cover an accident that involves disc brakes. Please read the below quote from Cycling Australia.
“CA’s Tech Reg’s do not provide provision for the use of disc brakes in road races and will not be updated to include them at this time. In the latter half of 2015 and early 2016 the UCI trialled their use in sanctioned events. The outcome of this trial period saw the UCI make a determination not to allow any further use of disc brakes in road competition events. During this trial period CA was not trialling the use of disc brakes in any domestic road event and through the period their use was not allowed according to CA technical regulations and this position remains.”
