UCI Junior World Championship Wednesday, July 23, 20082008 UCI Junior World Championships
- Cape Town,
South
Africa
Michael Matthews, 17 from Canberra came tantalizingly close to a podium position last
night in the 2008 UCI Junior World Championships being held in Cape Town, South Africa. Michael was superb
through out the race to finish in 8th place just missing a podium
spot by the narrowest of margins.
How the races
unfolded.
The athletes woke on the morning of
the race to clearing sky’s and a forecast top temperature of 22 degrees. A ride
over the course the previous day gave mixed feeling to the Australians, the
course was a 13.6km loop with the U19 Women covering 6 laps (81.6km) and the U19
Men completing 10 circuits (136km). Chloe found the course to her liking however
both Michael and Alastair knew it would be a tough day in the office as the
climbs were not hard enough to break up the peloton so it may be a big bunch
finish, they were hoping for rain and strong winds.
U19 Junior Women’s
Race
The Women were first on the course
with 62 riders taking to the start line and it was attack from the start, all
the Australian girls sitting comfortable for the first few laps. There were
constant attacks off the front but the large bunch had plenty of eager riders
willing to bring them back. Aggressive Australian rider Lauren Kitchen tried
relentlessly to initiate breaks through out the race however every attempt was
brought back, her Australian team mates Chloe Hosking and Zoe Appel unable to
control the aggressive pack. The Australians appeared to be sitting comfortable
on or near the front when ever needed. With approximately a lap and a half to go
in the ever dangerous feed zone there was a touch of wheels and Chloe came down.
Chloe was quick to get back up, appeared uninjured and was soon back in the main
peloton but had to work her way back to the front.
A solid attack saw Lauren Kitchen in
another break that looked like it may be the winning one as the break seemed to
be able to hold the pack off, after 10km off the front and closing in toward the
finish the break was brought back. It was going to be a bunch finish. The
attacks and counter attacks were relentless with last ditched efforts by all
riders but steaming into the finish straight it was going to be a hectic bunch
sprint. Jolien D’Hoore from Belgian taking the win, Italy and Germany
filling out the podium. Zoe Apple the best of the Aussies in 27th,
Chloe Hosking in 37th, Lauren Kitchen 39th and Sophe Ootes
in 49th.
U19 Men’s Road
Race
A huge field of 160 riders met the
starter in the Junior men’s race with the Australians seeded mid field it was
going to be a battle just to see the front of the race let alone have an impact
on the race. The Australians were also hopelessly out numbered, with the changes
to the qualification system for Nations this year Australia was caught out only
qualifying 3 starters against the very strong European teams being able to field
up to 6 riders each, even NZ had qualified 5 riders. From the start the attacks
went off the front and the pace was on, it was going to be a fast race. In a
testament to the Australians talent however it didn’t take them that long to
find the front of the race and were quickly in the tick of the action.
Unfortunately for Alastair Loutit it would appear he was not over a stomach
complaint 36 hours before the start as he had to withdraw from the race at about
the half way mark looking not very well at all. Michael Matthews however was
tremendously strong at the front of the field. As the race developed it appeared
that none of the attacks would succeed as like the Women’s race the course was
not hard enough to break up the field, that didn’t stop riders trying though,
wave after wave of riders attacking the head of the pack, each trying for that
elusive winning break, each time 100 riders would reel them
back.
With 2 laps remaining Michael
Matthews joined a very strong attack, for a while it appeared as if this break
may succeed, unfortunately like all the rest this too was brought back and it
was looking like a bunch kick of approx 100 riders. Coming into the finish
straight Michael was prominent near the front and looked very good for a podium
spot and possibly the win. A crash in the finish straight disrupted some riders,
Michael was unaffected and challenged strongly for the win, across the line and
it was Johan Le Bon from France, Italy and Denmark
taking the minor medals, Michael crossing superbly in 8th place.
Totally awesome ride from Michael.
The odds were stacked against him but he showed his class through out the race
matching it with the best in the World.
So that’s the end of the Junior
World Track and Road Championships, well done to all the Australians but
particularly our Canberra contingent of Thomas Palmer (2 times 2008 Junior World
Champion and Silver medalist on the Track), Michael Matthews amazing
8th place in the Road Race, Chloe Hosking 37th in the Road
Race and Alastair Loutit.
We are so proud of all of
you.

Junior Worlds Road Race Review Wednesday, July 23, 2008Junior Worlds Road Race
Review
Can a Canberra rider win the 2008 Junior World
Road Race Championships?
The Junior World Road Race and Time
Trial Championships kick off in Cape Town South Africa on Friday the 18th July 2008 with the
Individual Time Trial and the Road race on 20th July
2008.
Canberra is strongly represented in the
Australian Road Team with Michael Matthews and Alistair Loutit coming into the
event showing exceptional form in European lead up races. Chloe Hosking has also
shown incredible form coming off 3 stage wins in the Canberra Junior and Open
Women’s Tour.
Sensationally Chloe’s World
Championship chances were dealt a blow a little over 6 weeks ago when a
sickening crash at the Sydney Road Titles at the end of May threatened to end
her chances. Chloe was knocked unconscious, lost skin, had other serious medical
conditions and broke her thumb in the crash. However it takes more that to stop
Chloe, it wasn’t long before she was back on the home trainer with a cast on,
then soon back on the road sporting a bright pink specially moulded lightweight
cast and then very quickly back into competition. At the Canberra Junior and
Open Women’s Tour, the last hit out for the Australian Junior Women’s team
before departing for the Junior World Championships Chloe showed the injuries
had not slowed her down dominating the event winning both Road Stages and the
Criterium.
Chloe would be an even money bet if
the women’s road race came down to a bunch kick with the support of her
Australian Team mates. Or I am sure Chloe will do whatever it takes to protect
an Australian Team Mate with a chance of victory.
Michael Matthews and Alistair Loutit
have shown some awesome form in Europe while riding for Australia in the
lead up races to the Junior World Championships. Racing in the
Tre
Ciclistica Internazionale Brescianain Italy early July, Michael Matthews
took out the Proulouge with Alistair Loutit not far behind, Alistair after 3
stages was the highest placed Australian sitting in 5th place on GC. The
Australian Team switched focus from GC to stage wins with Alistair and the other
Australians ensuring Michael had the best oppertunities for stage wins., Michael
picking up a 2nd stage win during the event.
Next was the Nations Cup GP Général
Patton in Luxemburg. This was an important event with most of the top European
Nations sending their National Teams. Both Michael and Alistair placing well on
the first stage, with the 2nd (and last) stage mountainous it was up to the
Australians to position Michael in a winning break and if successful then
protect the break. Showing exceptional form Michael ended up riding away from
the field to win the Stage by over 1 minute and place 2nd
overall.
Both Michael and Alistair have
proven that they are World Class cyclist, both are in exceptional form and
looking forward to the Junior World Championship Road Race on the 20th. No
matter if they are going for the win or protecting another Australian these two
Canberra riders are sure to be in the thick of it come
Sunday.
So to answer the question leading
into this report, I think a Canberra rider can win the Junior World Championship
Road Race in 2008. Anyway the race eventuates Chloe, Michael and Alistair have
proven they are World Class and Canberra should be proud of
them.

Tom Palmer Scores Gold Again at Worlds Wednesday, July 16, 2008 Thomas Palmer wins Junior World Championship in the Madison - 2008 UCI Junior World Championships - Cape Town, South Africa Thomas Palmer 18 from Canberra won his second World Championship last night at the 2008 Junior World Championship in Cape Town, South Africa. The Australian pairing of Thomas Palmer (ACT)and Luke Davidson (NSW)set up the win early, winning the first sprintand consistently gaining points with 3rd places in the next 3 sprints, with only 2 sprints leftthe Australians wereonly 1 point in front ofthe very strong Belgian pairingwith the Swiss pairing just behind in 3rd place. It was down to a 3 way battle for the World Championship with any of the top 3 Nationscapable of winning. The second last sprint the Australians won with theBelgians a close second, the Swiss missed out so although the Swiss were still in with a chance it came down to a battle between the Australians and the Belgians in the last sprint for the World Championship. The Australian pair heavily marked the Belgians in the final 10 laps while also needing to keep a careful eye on the Swiss. The last sprint it was desperation stakes with the Australians, Belgians and Swiss attacking each other to find a weakness, none was found. A awesome 3 lap turn from AustralianLuke Davidson just before the final sprint enabled Thomas Palmer the recovery time he needed to contest the final sprint. In a hectic final lap the Australians, Belgians and Swiss went toe to toe, the crowed was on the edge of their seats screaming for their respective Nations, the Swisstaking outthe final sprint with Thomas Palmer magnificent in the last 100mtrs to overhaul the Belgians to take second place and the JuniorWorld Championship MadisonTitle. An ecstatic Australian pair carrying the Australian flag between them on their Victory lap. In other Australian News 16 year old Megan Dunn from Dubbo won her 3rd Junior World Championship last night adding the Points race Championship to her Scratch race and Team Pursuit World Championship wins. This girl has a big future as well. Annette Edmonson won a Silver medal in the Sprints - Peter Lewis - 5th in the sprints
- Ben Saunders - 6th in the sprints
- Paul Fellows - 8th in the sprints

Tom Palmer Adds Silver to Gold at Worlds Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Canberra's Thomas Palmer secures Silver Medal at the 2008 Junior World Championship 2008 UCI Junior World Championships - Cape Town, South Africa
In an awesome display of raw speed Canberra’s Thomas Palmer won the
Silver medal in the 1,000mtr Time Trial last night at the 2008 Junior
World Championships in Cape Town, South Africa. Only confirmed to
ride the event hours before the start Tom was a picture of nervous
concentration as he sat in the starter’s gate. Starting last in the
field Tom had just witnessed sensational French specialist sprinter
Quentin Lafargue set a super fast time of 1min 3.860sec, dislodging
Australian team mate Scott Law (1min 5.486sec) from first place.
Considering the Cape Town Velodrome is considered very slow Lafargue’s
time was a scorcher. However Tom is the ultimate competitor,
shutting out all distractions to set the second fastest time (1min
4.829sec) to secure the silver medal. What was most impressive
about this result is Tom has not trained for the Kilo since winning the
2007 Junior World Title in this event. Tom moved away from the sprint
based events to concentrate on the endurance events of the Individual
Pursuit, Team Pursuit (2008 Junior World Champion), Points race and
Madison as well as the Road Race events. A true reflection of this
young mans talent. Other Australians to perform well on day 3 - Megan Dunn, Ashlee Ankudinoff and Sarah Kent – World Champions in the Woman’s Team Pursuit
- Luke Durbridge – Bronze in the points race
- Scott Law – Bronze in the Kilo

Vicki Whitelaw Wins Giro d'Italia Femminile Stage 5 Monday, July 14, 2008 Vicki Whitelaw has won the 5th Stage of the Giro d'Italia Femminile by just 0.36 seconds in a speed of almost 47 khp. The stage consisted of a 9.3km individual time trial - a discipline in which Whitelaw has had past success, winning the Oceania Time Trial Championship in 2007. The course for the stage was flat with a couple of small power climbs created by railway bridges. There were a number of round-a-bouts (traffic circles) and tight corners which brought some of the riders to grief. 'After a bit of a bad day yesterday I felt like I didn't have anything to lose' Whitelaw reported. 'I really attacked the course, taking some calculated risks in the corners. There were a couple of instances where my rear wheel started to slide but I managed to hold it up. I'm really happy to get this result.'http://www.vickiwhitelaw.com Full Details on Cyclingnews

After qualifying at the top of the competition earlier in the evening the young Australian Team knew their Russian competitors in the finalwould be serious competitors but they also knew they had a bit more in reserve as well. The final was a cracker, the Russian Team took it out hard in an attempt to panic the Australian Team, the Russians went out at a scorching pace, a second faster over the first 1,000mtrs, then the Russiansapplied more pressure, increasing their lead to 2 seconds at the 2,000mtr mark. The Australians did not panic however, they followed their coaches plan to perfection, Thomas Palmer and Rohan Dennis taking control of the Australian Team putting in long fast turns in the next 1,000mtrs bringing the deficit back to only 1/10th of a second at the 3km mark. Marshals desperately needed for Junior Tour Friday, June 20, 2008The Kowalski Recruitment Junior and Women's Junior Tour will be held over the period Friday 4 July to Sunday 6 July 2008. This is a signature event for ACT cycling and with the event only 3 weeks away we only have a quarter of the marshals we need to run this race. If you have raced this year on the road or criterium circuit please consider helping out. Many of the marshals at races you have participated in are the parents of juniors. For example at the Stromlo Hill climb last weekend 2 of the 5 marshals were parents of juniors and one was even a junior under 19 rider. So please reciprocate and help out. All it takes is a few hours.
In 2008 the Open Women and Under 19 Men and Women's categories tour will include a Criterium on Saturday afternoon. For more information see the tour website at: http://canberratour.actcyclingevents.com.au/index.asp?IntCatId=29
To make this race happen we need your support. In particular we need marshals, lead car drivers, spares vehicles and a range of other helpers. If you are able to help out contact Malcolm Cook on 0412 284 701 (mobile) or email at: malcolm.cook@deewr.gov.au Back to top
