News2010 Road Series and Points Score with Prizes Monday, March 1, 2010The conclusion of the very popular 2009-10 Canberra Cycling Club crit series means the road series is about to begin and the Canberra Tour is just around the corner. The 2010 road series comprises thirteen rounds starting on Saturday, 6 March 2010, and finishing on Saturday, 6 November. That’s a road race nearly ever two weeks. The races included in the road series are shown on the club website. For this year there is already a confirmed prize pool totaling $3000. So far two of Canberra’s leading bike shops have come on board and will be the sources of many of the prizes. They include the new Velo Republic in Kingston that has already established itself at the forefront as a dedicated road cycling store, and the BikeShed which has stores in Braddon, Gungahlin and Phillip and is well known for the breadth and depth of brands and the incredible advice offered and experience of staff. The points score is new and promises to be a catalyst for a great season of road cycling. The points score is open to all riders with a Cycling Australia membership regardless of club. In general the top five finishers in each grade will receive 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6 points while all other finishers will receive 2 points and non-finishers 1 point. There will be a separate points score for men and women, including on any occasion where men and women compete in the same race. Five points will be awarded for marshalling to a maximum of 10 points for over the season. Full details of the points score will be available on the Canberra Cycling Club website prior to the first race. First time racers are of course welcome. While a first timer can turn up on the day it will be necessary to be graded by the handicapper before you will be eligible for the points score. Contact details for the handicapper are on the club website. Information throughout the season including the updated points score and prizes will be made available on the club website. If you have any questions (or suggestions) please contact the club race secretary. The Canberra Cycling Club welcomes you to join in what promises to be a great series of road racing. Back to top

Calling all male A-grade cyclists! Wednesday, February 10, 2010The 2010 World Championships are approaching and it is likely that the racing will be contested in fairly mild conditions. With Australia ranked 3rd Nation in the World (Men; www.uci.ch) and hosting the next world championships, coaches and athletes are seeking effective strategies that will be useful for enhancing cycling time trial performance. The effect of environmental temperature on the thermoregulatory responses during a pre-cooling manoeuvre and subsequent time trial performance - This study aims to investigate the most effective and practical preparation strategy for use in the Wold cycling Championship time trial.
- This study will provide evidence-based guidelines for Australian Cyclists regarding the appropriateness of a pre-cooling procedure to optimise cycling time trial performance under varying environmental conditions.
Testing at the AIS will include: VO2 Max test – a progressive maximal test that will determine your peak oxygen consumption, maximal aerobic power and heart rate. You will be required to give a maximal effort. Course familiarisation – You will be required to ride at least once over the Geelong time trial circuit, that will involve 2 laps of a ~23km course. Performance Trial – you will be required to complete 4 x simulated time trials over the Official Geelong Time trial course (but in the AIS Lab in Canberra) with 3-7 days between trials. For the 24 hr before each trial you will have your diet prescribed and provided for you. Before each trial you will be required to perform a different preparation strategy that will include novel pre-cooling strategies in different ambient temperatures, however the temperature you will time trial in will be the same (21˚C). Although, be warned – you will be required to give a maximal effort. Recovery – As a result of you participation, you will have access to the (New’er) AIS Recovery facility in attempt to recovery your body from what you put it through! What else? CASH! - There will be prize money A total of $4,000 in prize money will be paid to reward the following efforts: *This study requires 12 males, so if >12 riders are interested, selection will be based on preliminary testing (VO2). Junior NSW team pursuit championships - Report Saturday, February 6, 2010 On Saturday 30 January 2010, three CCC riders participated in the NSW team pursuit championships at Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney, in the JW17 division. The CCC team of Megan Pitcher, Allison Rice and Maddy Marshall qualified for the gold medal ride-off with the second fastest qualification time of the day.The three CCC riders rode a smooth qualification race with Megan showing great strength and control (and showing off a new track bike), Maddy showing some good form in her first year in the JW17 category, and Allison driving strongly as she has done all season. The JW17s team pursuit was contested over 2km, with three riders per team and the time taken on the third rider across the line. The CCC team qualified in a respectable time of 2 minutes 49 seconds, two seconds behind St George, with Vikings third fastest and Southern Cross fourth. In the final, the CCC team were challenging the St George team for most of the race, but tired a little in the last two laps, and although they improved their time by one second, they were beaten again by St George. The second place shows the great depth that the CCC has in the JW17 division, and although not eligible for a medal (as it was a NSW championship event), all three should be very proud of their result.

Training with a Heart Rate Monitor Seminar Saturday, February 6, 2010- Thursday 18th February 6:30pm - 8:30pm
- ACT Sports House 100 Maitland Street Hackett
Are you getting the most out of your heart rate monitor? Heart
rate monitors provide an effective way of assisting training for
cycling and many other endurance sports, including triathlon, rowing
and running. The current range of heart rate monitors provide far more
functions that many older models and most are now downloadable to your
computer for analysis. But for many people the more advanced functions
go unused and heart rate monitors just become expensive bike computers. This session aims to demystify training with a heart rate monitor and will cover the following topics: Why train with a heart rate monitor Overview of common functions of heart rate monitors
How to effectively use a heart rate monitor to guide your training Post training/race analysis of downloadable heart rate monitor files How to monitor your overall training progress with data from your heart rate monitor
During the session several training and race files will be
analysed using software from some of the main companies (Polar and
Garmin). This session is open to anyone interested in learning more about training with a heart rate monitor. For further details please contact Jason Mahoney via email at jasonm.home@gmail.com Back to top
Northside Training Bunch Monday, February 1, 2010Hi All, It has been noticed that there is an expanding number of cyclists residing in the Gungahlin/North Belconnen area. Given the sometimes inconvenient start time combined with the distance to Phillip from this part of the city, I am looking to gauge the support for commencing a Northside bunch on the days where there is nothing currently organised from Phillip (ie. Mondays and Thursdays). Please note: These rides are not intended to replicate/replace anything happening on the Southside, just to fill some apparent gaps in the weekly training rides. My proposal is to meet at 6am in the Gungahlin town centre, say at The Bike Shed for consistency's sake. The rides would be a big loop of the Northside, heading off in a generally southerly direction, picking up riders as we go and staying north of Lake Burley Griffin for about an hour. The exact course/s can be decided later, at this point in time I am only seeking to gauge whether there is any interest for something like this to be created, as I propose that we start these two new rides some time next month. However, I am keen to make the Monday ride a relaxed event, doubling as a recovery/introductory ride for new cyclists. I'm open to suggestions for the Thursday course. As such, if you think you might be interested in joining in please let either myself (simon.christopher@immi.gov.au) or Jason Parkes (president@canberracyclingclub.org.au) know by email, or even one day if you see us in the bunch. You don't have to commit to anything, I'm just after a rough estimate of the level of demand for a Northside bunch ride. Kind regards Simon Christopher

To celebrate the launch, Cycling Australia has decided to run a National CycleSkill Coach Day to officially introduce the updated training program to the public. This will involve each State and Territory delivering the new, updated Cycling Australia NCAS CycleSkill Coach Training Program on 13th February and targeting Australia-wide training of over 100 CycleSkill coaches in one day! “We are very excited about this initiative, coaches play such an integral role in the development of cyclists at all levels and the sport could not survive without them. This gives us an opportunity to bring many new coaches into the sport at grassroots level and build a base for the future of cycling coaching across Australia' said Brendan Moriarty, Cycling Australia's National Coaching Coordinator. Brendan added: 'All of the State/Territory Organistion Development staff have been extremely accomodating in the planning of this day and they will be rewarded with the influx of new coaches.' He continued 'This course has always specifically targeted the coach who aims to assist novice cyclists in the areas of basic cycle skills, the correct choice and fitting of cycling equipment and optimising bicycle set-up. Now, a practical coaching module has been included to better prepare coaches for the hands-on coaching they will be doing after the course.” For more information about the NCAS CycleSkill Coach Training Program, please download the Information Sheet. To apply to attend your local NCAS CycleSkill Coach Training Program on 13th February, please the Coaching Contacts section of the website to find details of your State/Territory Organisation's course facilitator. CCC Christmas Bunch Ride - 23rd December 6am Monday, December 21, 2009THE WORLD (WELL CANBERRA ANYWAY) FAMOUS CHRISTMAS BUNCH RIDE IS ON THIS WEDNESDAY
Every year on the Wednesday before Christmas the Canberra Cycling Club holds the famous 'Christmas Bunch Ride'. This ride has in the past be known to attract some of Australia's best riders, including Michael Rogers and Mat Hayman. However, the ride is a celebration of Christmas on bikes - not a smashathon. Starting at the Bike Shed Woden at 6am it winds its way through the suburbs at a very leisurely 25kph or so along Adelaide Avenue, around Parliament House, along Canberra Avenue and back along Wentworth Avenue. Sometimes a lap of Civic is included (depending on time) before the ride finishes at Yarralumla shops. Normally a fat man in a red suit also joins in on the ride. Given the leisurely pace, the ride is suitable for juniors and their parents or those 'older riders' who just want to roll around with arguably the biggest bunch seen in Canberra. So gather up all your excess decorations, spruce up your bike and get to the bike shed in Phillip at 6.00am. Everyone is welcome to come along or join in along the route. Cycling ACT social media policy statement Monday, December 7, 2009 Social Media sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, LinkedIn, YouTube, as well as Forums and Blogs are exciting new avenues expressing creativity, and sharing interests and knowledge. Participation in these online communities is therefore supported. However, over a number of years there have been repeated incidents where online discussions and posting of online content have caused distress to individuals or groups of members and has detracted from the community’s overall enjoyment of cycling. The Cycling ACT social media policy is guided by the key principles of the Cycling Australia (CA) Code of Conduct which are: - CA wishes to operate in an environment where people show respect for others and their property. Respect is defined as consideration for another’s physical and emotional well being and possessions, to ensure no damage or deprivation is caused to either.
- CA wishes to operate in an environment that is free from harassment. Harassment is defined as any action directed at an individual or group that creates a hostile, intimidating or offensive environment. (Refer to Australian Sports Commission Guidelines for Harassment-Free Sport).
- CA wishes to operate in a non-discriminatory environment. Respect the right, dignity and worth of every human being - within the context of the activity; treat everyone equally regardless of gender, ethnic origin or religion.
- Persons to whom this Code applies acknowledge and agree to comply with the disciplinary and grievance procedures promulgated by CA. If any disciplinary action is taken, persons directly affected shall be given the opportunity to participate in those proceedings and the right to appeal against any decision against them.
Cycling ACT promotes responsible use of social media and requires its members, when posting about the Federation and its members or Federation or club endorsed, promoted or conducted events or activities, to observe the following guidelines for responsible social media use. 1. Cycling ACT requires members to take responsibility for their own words and for the comments allowed on their sites or forums. Cycling ACT members will not post unacceptable content, and will delete comments that contain it. Unacceptable content is defined as anything included or linked to that: - a. is being used to abuse, harass, stalk or threaten others
- b. is libelous, knowingly false, or misrepresents another person,
- c. infringes upon a copyright or trademark
- d. violates an obligation of confidentiality
- e. violates the privacy of others
2. Cycling ACT members don’t post anything online that they wouldn’t say in person. 3. Cycling ACT members connect privately before they respond publicly. When members encounter conflicts and misrepresentation in social networking sites, they make every effort to talk privately and directly to the person(s) involved–or find an intermediary who can do so–before publishing any posts or comments about the issue. 4. Cycling ACT strongly discourages personal attacks. When someone who is publishing comments that are offensive, members will tell them so (privately, if possible–see 3 above). 5. Anonymous comments are discouraged. All content posters should be required to supply a valid email address before they can post, authorized posters may identify themselves with an alias, rather than their real name. 6. Cycling ACT prefers members not to respond to nasty comments about them, their group, event or site. If posts veer into abuse or libel, Cycling ACT supports the use of disciplinary and grievance procedures to resolve issues. Cycling ACT encourages all members to “think before posting”. Members should recognize that even if posting to a private section of a social networking site comments can appear in public areas through a variety of means and can easily be found. Amy Gillett Foundation Canberra to Melbourne Fundraising Ride Tuesday, November 10, 2009Support Jessie McLean - Riding from Canberra to Melbourn for the Amy Gillett Foundation
I love riding my bike. It’s as simple as that. I have been riding now for nearly 10 years, and as many will understand I had no idea about all the disciplines, etiquette, fashion and of course the coffee culture when I first started. But I soon learned what a unique and exceptional sport cycling is. It’s the passion we have for this sport that brings us to the Amy Gillett Foundation to support the important work it does to make cycling on our roads safer. I am a past scholarship holder and proud to be a part of the Amy Gillett Foundation, I hope everyone gets behind the campaign by sponsoring our riders to Melbourne and by spreading the messagea metre matters.
